Expanded Unemployment Benefits
The Act provides funding to state governments for enhanced unemployment benefits. Existing unemployment benefits are boosted by $600 a week and laid-off workers may receive their full pay for four months (even if the person is currently making less) and an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits. The Act also provides "short-term compensation" benefits to subsidize employees who have their hours reduced in lieu of a layoff. Under this program, the federal government will fund the difference between the reduced-hour payments and the unemployment compensation benefits available.
The federal benefits extend to independent contractors and self-employed people.
